This post explains the reasons how and why the Contact development team came up with the concept.
When analysing web analytics data from contact-creative.com it became clear that, unless coming to the site to look for a specific creative, the vast majority of users do one of just 2 things upon arrival:
1) Enter a very specific keyword in the search bar to try and call up a more precise selection of samples.
2) Go straight to the ‘photographers’ or ‘illustrators’ section to see which portfolio have recently been updated.
What surprised us was how few users entered wider search terms to do with the subject or style of creative they were looking for or even chose one of the preset search categories… so we surveyed and spoke to as many as we could to find out why.
The most popular response was that, as with most portfolio directory sites, entering wider search terms often bought up so many creatives i would be impossible to check out all of them.
Squinting at little thumbnail images to try and decide which creatives to look at in more detail can’t be the best way to do it…
Contact Collections allow users to instantly pick a selection of creatives showcasing artwork relevant to the type of project they are working on and browse nice, big sample images to see which creatives are worth looking at in more detail
Arranged into categories by commercial purpose rather than by style or medium, with Contact Collections users can immediately browse a varied selection of samples without having to search or trudge through loads of irrelevant imagery.
The portfolio site remains to provide a more precise way of searching for creatives that still suits if you know exactly what your looking for and provides a visual directory showcasing every creative who advertises with us.
